After a fun day on the water finding a few whales, we sat and watched the sun set on my brother and sister-in-law’s balcony. The sunsets are truly spectacular in San Diego and I never get tired of losing myself in their beauty. After darkness was upon the city I headed to Newport Pizza & Ale House for a slice and a night cap. As I sat at the bar waiting for my slice I struck up a conversation with a few locals and the bartender. After a pretty good slice of pie, good conversation and some house brew I headed to tuck in for the night and get some much needed rest.
Breakfast Republic
As the sun began to rise over the Laguna mountains east of San Diego, I stumbled out of the Hostel and into the crisp morning air of Newport Avenue. I breathed in the cool seaside air and trekked up the hill to retrieve Davin. The two of us quietly left the apartment for one of my favorite morning eateries in Ocean Beach, Breakfast Republic. It is about a 10 minute walk from the apartment back past the hostel about 2 blocks east on Newport. We sat at a corner table next to the open window and enjoyed the fresh air. I ordered my breakfast appetizer in a glass followed by a delicious plate of chilaquiles, while Davin had a pile of several flavors of pancakes and a tower of hash browns. After we finished breakfast we headed out to explore the rocky shores around sunset cliffs. We clambered around the rocks and hidden beaches for the majority of the morning. We explored around yoga classes and photo shoots as the beaches and cliffs began to fill with people as ourselves enjoying the day. At midday we rejoined the rest of the group and headed east to Rolando to meet up with more friends and enjoy the Rolando street fair.
Rolando Street Fair
For 24 years the Rolando Street fair has welcomed San Diegans and visitors to her streets in spring to celebrate the coming of summer. One of the only annual street fairs in San Diego. The Rolando Street fair offers live performances, concerts, over 150 venders and a Beer Garden.
As we arrived in Rolando Village we met up with more friends and wandered the “catwalks” that crisscross the village. The homes in this village are tightly packed and on roads that switchback and forth as they wind up and down the hills. The “catwalks” are like beautiful back alleyways that connect the streets. As we made our way around the neighborhood we would meet up with new friends and leave some behind. It was a very relaxed organic meet and greet in the beautiful neighborhood of Rolando.
We eventually made our way into the fair itself. We caught a few performances, are some delicious street fair offerings and just enjoyed the scene in this eastern San Diego neighborhood. After we wandered the fair for awhile we decided to head back to Ocean Beach.
Afternoon and nightfall
As we strolled back into Ocean beach Davin and I headed straight to the beach. The sun was waning quickly into its nightly resting place and we enjoyed the cooler air of the fading light. We splashed around and dug in the dirt until the only light left was a sliver of silver blue over the pacific. I would sit and take in the wonderful sight of nightfall over Southern California. With a partly cloudy sky that evening it offered a different and differently beautiful type of sunset. After darkness had enveloped the sea completely we headed to Pizza Port for a pie. We recapped another wonderful day over our dinner and it was soon time to head in for the night.
